You Are Here. Why?
Before any religion, before any argument — one fact you cannot get around.
Questions4 min
You did not ask to be born. You did not choose your century, your parents, your language or the colour of your eyes. You arrived — conscious, curious, capable of asking this very question — into a universe that was already here.
Most of life is spent not noticing this. There is work to do, people to love, a phone to check. But every so often the question surfaces on its own: at a funeral, at the birth of a child, or on a night when the sky is unusually clear. Why is there anything at all? And why am I in it?
If you exist for no reason, then nothing you do finally matters. If you exist for a reason, then nothing matters more than finding out what it is.
The Qur'an asks the question first
It would be easy to assume that scripture only gives answers. The Qur'an, strikingly, spends a great deal of time asking. It puts the question of purpose directly to the reader — and it does so as a challenge to think, not as a command to stop thinking.
- Qur'anQur'an 23:115
- Qur'anQur'an 75:36
أَفَحَسِبْتُمْ أَنَّمَا خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ عَبَثًا وَأَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْنَا لَا تُرْجَعُونَ
Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?
- Qur'anQur'an 23:115
- TafsirIbn Kathir, Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, on 23:115-116Creation was not in vain; the verse is a rhetorical rebuke to those who deny the return.
Does man think that he will be left neglected?
- Qur'anQur'an 75:36
What this journey is — and is not
Over eleven short chapters you will be asked to consider, in order: whether there is a Creator; who He could be; whether He would leave humanity without direction; how genuine guidance could be recognised; and whether the Qur'an and the man who brought it stand up to that examination. Then — only then — what it would mean to say yes.
Nothing here asks you to switch off your reason. The Qur'an itself repeatedly says the opposite: look, think, reflect, reason. But it also makes a claim that reason alone cannot make for you: that the One who made you has spoken, and that you will return to Him.
You are free to stop at any chapter. The only thing this site asks is that you do not dismiss the question before you have looked at the evidence.

- Qur'anQur'an 51:56
- Qur'anQur'an 67:2
The Qur'an's own one-line answer to 'why am I here' is this:
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
- Qur'anQur'an 51:56
- TafsirIbn Kathir, Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, on 51:56Glosses 'to worship Me' as: to command them to worship Me, and cites the interpretation 'so that they know Me'.
