Were You Created for Nothing?

One verse. One question. Three minutes.

3 min

If you were made for nothing, why does 'nothing' feel like the wrong answer?

Reflection

Almost no one actually lives as if their life is meaningless. We grieve; we keep promises; we want our children to turn out well; we feel that betrayal is wrong even when no one finds out. All of this assumes that what we do matters. The question is whether that assumption is true — or whether we are simply wired to feel something that isn't there.

أَفَحَسِبْتُمْ أَنَّمَا خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ عَبَثًا وَأَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْنَا لَا تُرْجَعُونَ

Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?
Qur'an — Surah Al-Mu'minun 23:115Translation: Saheeh International

Explanation

The Arabic ʿabathan means in play, for sport, without a serious end. The Qur'an does not argue that life has purpose; it asks whether you really believe it does not — and it ties the answer to a second idea: return. If there is a purpose, there is someone to answer to. The two stand or fall together.
