What Does It Mean to Submit?

Reason can bring you to the door. Submission is walking through it.

Everything so far has been an argument. This chapter is about something different: what happens when the argument is over and you find yourself convinced.

The Qur'an's word for that step is islām — to submit, to hand oneself over. Abraham is its model. Asked to submit, he does not negotiate the terms.

When his Lord said to him, "Submit", he said "I have submitted [in Islam] to the Lord of the worlds."
Qur'an — Surah Al-Baqarah 2:131Translation: Saheeh International

Submission is not the end of thinking

This is the point most often misunderstood. Islam does not say: stop reasoning and obey. It says: reason your way to the source, and once you are sure of the source, trust it — including on matters you have not yet understood.

That is not intellectual surrender. It is how trust works everywhere. You do not verify every calculation your surgeon makes; you verify the surgeon. If you have satisfied yourself that the Qur'an is from the Creator, then encountering a command whose full wisdom you do not yet grasp does not undo what you established. The rational response is to obey while continuing to learn.

The only statement of the [true] believers when they are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them is that they say, "We hear and we obey." And those are the successful.
Qur'an — Surah An-Nur 24:51Translation: Saheeh International

Belief, and the practice that carries it

When the angel Gabriel asked the Prophet ﷺ what Islam is, the answer was practical: testify that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger, pray, give the obligatory charity, fast Ramadan, and make the pilgrimage if you are able. Asked what faith (īmān) is, the answer was about belief: in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and divine decree.

Submission is both. It is what you hold to be true and what you do about it, every day.

“Islam is that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, that you establish the prayer, pay the zakah, fast Ramadan, and perform pilgrimage to the House if you are able to make the journey.”

Sahih Muslim · 8From the hadith of Jibril, narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab. Quoted in part.

What it feels like from the inside

Muslims describe submission less as a loss than as a relief. The exhausting project of being your own final authority on every question — what is good, what matters, what happens next — is set down. In its place is a relationship with the One who made you, whom you now address directly, five times a day, in your own words and in His.

The Qur'an's own word for the state that follows is not 'obedience'. It is peace.

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.
Qur'an — Surah Ar-Ra'd 13:28Translation: Saheeh International
