Would God Leave Humanity Without Guidance?
If you were made deliberately, would you be abandoned to guess?
Questions5 min
Suppose the previous chapters are right: there is a Creator, and He made you on purpose. A new question follows immediately. Would such a Creator make beings who can ask 'why am I here?' and then never answer?
It is possible to imagine a god who does that — a distant first cause who winds up the universe and walks away. But it is not what you would expect from a Creator described as knowing, wise and merciful. The Qur'an's claim is that He did not walk away. From the first human being onward, He spoke.
- Qur'anQur'an 2:38
The Qur'an's account of humanity begins with guidance already promised:
We said, "Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve."
- Qur'anQur'an 2:38
And it insists that no people, anywhere, were left out:
And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allah and avoid Taghut."…
- Qur'anQur'an 16:36
- Qur'anQur'an 35:24"…And there was no nation but that there had passed within it a warner."
Guidance as fairness
There is a second reason the Qur'an gives. If human beings are going to be held accountable — and the Qur'an says they will be — then it would be unjust to hold them to a standard they were never told. So the sending of messengers is described not only as mercy, but as the precondition for any judgement at all.
- Qur'anQur'an 17:15
- Qur'anQur'an 4:165
[We sent] messengers as bringers of good tidings and warners so that mankind will have no argument against Allah after the messengers. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.
- Qur'anQur'an 4:165
…And never would We punish until We sent a messenger.
- Qur'anQur'an 17:15
The same Creator who guides the bee
The Qur'an also draws a quieter connection. The One who guides every creature in what it needs — the bird to its migration, the infant to its mother — is not indifferent to whether the one creature capable of asking about Him ever finds the answer. Moses, asked by Pharaoh who his Lord is, replies with exactly this:
- Qur'anQur'an 20:50
- Qur'anQur'an 87:2-3
He said, "Our Lord is He who gave each thing its form and then guided [it]."
- Qur'anQur'an 20:50
What follows
If God has guided humanity, then the next question is unavoidable and practical: how would you tell genuine guidance from a human invention? Many people have claimed to speak for God. Not all of them can be right. The next chapter is about what a reasonable person should look for.
