Why Islam?

Not 'why this religion among many' — but 'is this the one message the messengers always brought?'

Put the previous chapters together and Islam's claim comes into focus. It does not present itself as one option in a marketplace of religions. It says that there has only ever been one message from God — worship Him alone, live rightly, prepare to meet Him — and that this message was given to every people, was distorted or forgotten over time, and was delivered one final time through Muhammad ﷺ.

The Arabic word islām means submission — to God. On this understanding, Abraham was a Muslim. So were Moses and Jesus. The word describes a relationship, not a tribe.

Say, [O believers], "We have believed in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants and what was given to Moses and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."

Why not simply stay where I am?

Because the Qur'an makes a claim that cannot be half-accepted. If it is from God, then it is His final word to you, and it says plainly that He will accept nothing other than submission to Him. If it is not from God, you should reject it entirely. What it does not permit is being admired from a distance as one nice tradition among others.

This is not arrogance. It is the same logic you would apply to any claim of ultimate importance: either it is true, in which case it matters more than anything, or it is false, in which case it should be set aside.

To the People of the Scripture — Jews and Christians — the Qur'an makes an invitation rather than a threat:

Say, "O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you - that we will not worship except Allah and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allah."…

And the choice is yours

Islam holds that faith cannot be forced, because forced faith is not faith. The Qur'an states the principle in a single sentence — and it states it in the same chapter that contains the Qur'an's most famous description of God.

There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong.…
