We Hear and We Obey

Four words that describe a whole relationship.

Once you are sure who is speaking, how much do you need to understand before you act?

Reflection

You already trust beyond your understanding every day — the pilot, the pharmacist, the engineer who designed the bridge. You have not verified their work; you have verified them. Trust in a source, once earned, reasonably extends to what the source says next.

سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا ۖ غُفْرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيْكَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ

"We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination."
Qur'an — Surah Al-Baqarah 2:285 (excerpt)Translation: Saheeh International

Explanation

The believers' words at the close of Surah al-Baqarah. Notice their shape: hearing, then obeying — then, immediately, asking forgiveness. Not because obedience is grudging, but because no one obeys perfectly, and the relationship includes that. Islam does not demand understanding before obedience. It asks for trust in the One who commands, and honesty about one's own shortfalls.
