This Life and Eternity

Dunya and Akhirah: how the Qur'an asks you to see the one in the light of the other.

Islam does not despise this world. It was made by Allah, it is full of His signs, and a Muslim is told to take their share of it. But Islam refuses to let this world pretend to be the whole story. The Arabic words are dunyā — the near, the lower — and ākhirah — the last, the final. The names already tell you how they relate.

Rather than invent comparisons, let the Qur'an describe both.

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.
Qur'an — Surah Al-Hadid 57:20Translation: Saheeh International

Notice that the verse does not say the world is evil. It says the world is brief, and that its pleasures deceive by seeming permanent. The image is agricultural and exact: green, then yellow, then dust.

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.
Qur'an — Surah Al-'Ankabut 29:64Translation: Saheeh International
But you prefer the worldly life, While the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
Qur'an — Surah Al-A'la 87:16-17Translation: Saheeh International

How the Prophet ﷺ described the proportion

Muslims are sometimes tempted to compute how eternity compares with seventy years. The Prophet ﷺ did not compute. He used an image — and it is the only comparison this page will offer.

“By Allah, this world in comparison to the Hereafter is nothing but as if one of you dipped his finger in the sea — let him see what it brings back.”

Sahih Muslim · 2858

And to his companion Ibn Umar, he gave a posture for living in it:

“Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveller.”

Sahih al-Bukhari · 6416

Not withdrawal — orientation

A traveller does not refuse to eat or sleep. He simply does not build a palace at the inn. The Qur'an gives the same balance in a single verse: seek the Hereafter with what Allah has given you — and do not forget your share of this world.

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you.…
Qur'an — Surah Al-Qasas 28:77Translation: Saheeh International

If the sea is what lasts, and this life is what your finger brings back — what are you spending it on?
