The Heavens and the Earth
Where the four categories must be kept furthest apart.

How to read this section
- Qur'anWhat the verse actually says.
- TafsirHow reliable Islamic scholarship explains the passage.
- ScienceWhat established scientific evidence currently demonstrates.
- ReflectionA thoughtful observation — not Tafsir, and not scientific proof.
What the verses say
Two frequently cited passages, quoted in full so the Arabic can be read directly.
أَوَلَمْ يَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَـٰهُمَا ۖ وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمَآءِ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ حَىٍّ ۖ أَفَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيْنَـٰهَا بِأَيْي۟دٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ
And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.
The classical readings
On Q 21:30, ratq means sewn shut or joined, and fatq means split apart. Classical commentators offered several explanations: the heavens and earth were one mass and were separated; or the sky was closed without rain and was opened; or the earth was closed without vegetation and was opened. The verse itself does not settle between them.
On Q 51:47, mūsi'ūn comes from the root و-س-ع (breadth, capacity). Al-Ṭabarī reports the classical readings as "possessors of power and capacity" and "we give amply and provide widely". The reading "we are expanding it" in the cosmological sense is a modern one, not a classical one.

What cosmology currently establishes
The universe is expanding: distant galaxies recede, and the rate is measured through redshift and standard candles. Extrapolating backwards gives a hot, dense early state roughly 13.8 billion years ago.
The strongest evidence is the cosmic microwave background — relic radiation mapped in detail by WMAP and by ESA's Planck mission — together with the observed abundances of light elements.

Where the popular claim stands
The claim that Q 21:30 states the Big Bang, and that Q 51:47 states cosmic expansion, is widely repeated and genuinely disputed — by scholars of Arabic and Tafsir as much as by scientists. The classical readings above are the reason for that dispute.
Our position: modern cosmology gives us a further perspective from which to contemplate these verses, without claiming that it is their only or original meaning. A reader who wants to weigh the connection should weigh it knowing exactly which category each statement belongs to.
