Water and Life
A statement the Qur'an makes plainly, and biology makes precisely.

How to read this section
- Qur'anWhat the verse actually says.
- TafsirHow reliable Islamic scholarship explains the passage.
- ScienceWhat established scientific evidence currently demonstrates.
- ReflectionA thoughtful observation — not Tafsir, and not scientific proof.
What the verse says
The clause appears inside Q 21:30, and a parallel statement appears at Q 24:45.
وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمَآءِ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ حَىٍّ
And We made from water every living thing.
How it was understood
Commentators read min al-mā' in more than one way: that every living thing was created from water; that water is what every living thing lives by; and, on some readings, a reference to the fluid of reproduction.
On any of these readings the argument is the same, and it is one the first audience could verify without instruments: life is contingent on something God provides and withholds. Verses about rain reviving dead land make the same point repeatedly.

What biology establishes
Water typically makes up around 60–70% of the mass of living cells. It is not passive filler: it is the solvent in which metabolism happens, it drives protein folding through the hydrophobic effect, it participates directly in hydrolysis and condensation reactions, and its hydrogen-bond network stabilises membranes and nucleic acids.
No known form of life functions without liquid water. This is why the search for life beyond Earth is organised around finding it.

A quiet convergence
This is one of the least sensational and most solid points in the section. A plain statement in a seventh-century text, verifiable then by observation, remains exactly true at the level of molecular biology — without needing to be stretched.
It is not a prediction of biochemistry. It is a statement about dependence, and biology describes the mechanism of that dependence in detail.
Reflect on the sign
The most ordinary substance on Earth is the one nothing alive can do without.
