What Was He Like?

The character of Muhammad ﷺ, in the words of those who lived with him.

Muhammad ﷺ

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
Qur'an — Surah Al-Qalam 68:4Translation: Saheeh International

The most useful testimony about a person comes from those who cannot be fooled: household members, servants, opponents. The reports below come from exactly those people, and each is referenced so it can be checked.

Character, in his own summary of his mission:

“I was only sent to perfect noble character.”

Musnad Ahmad · 8952; al-Bukhari, al-Adab al-Mufrad 273 — graded authentic by al-Albani

His wife Aisha, asked to describe him:

“His character was the Qur'an.”

Sahih Muslim · 746

Anas ibn Malik, who served him for ten years:

“I served the Prophet ﷺ for ten years, and he never said to me "uff", nor did he say of anything I did, "Why did you do that?" or of anything I did not do, "Why did you not do that?"”

Sahih al-Bukhari · 6038 (also Sahih Muslim 2309)

On generosity:

“The Prophet ﷺ was the most generous of people, and he was at his most generous in Ramadan when Jibril would meet him.”

Sahih al-Bukhari · 6 (also Sahih Muslim 2308)

On mercy, when he was urged to invoke against those who rejected him:

“I was not sent as a curser; I was sent only as a mercy.”

Sahih Muslim · 2599

On humility at home — Aisha was asked what he did in his house:

“He was in the service of his family, and when the time for prayer came, he would go out to pray.”

Sahih al-Bukhari · 676

On kindness to children and the vulnerable:

“He kissed al-Hasan ibn Ali while al-Aqra' ibn Habis was sitting with him. Al-Aqra' said, "I have ten children and I have never kissed any of them." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at him and said, "Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy."”

Sahih al-Bukhari · 5997 (also Sahih Muslim 2318)

On courage:

“The Prophet ﷺ was the best of people, the most generous of people and the bravest of people. The people of Madinah were alarmed one night, and the people went towards the sound — and the Prophet ﷺ met them, already returning, having gone ahead of them to it.”

Sahih al-Bukhari · 2908 (also Sahih Muslim 2307)

On justice, when influential people sought an exemption from a penalty for a thief of high birth:

“Those before you were destroyed because when a noble among them stole they let him be, and when a weak one among them stole they carried out the penalty on him. By Allah, if Fatimah the daughter of Muhammad were to steal, I would cut off her hand.”

Sahih al-Bukhari · 6788 (also Sahih Muslim 1688)
