Why Don't Muslims Believe in the Trinity?

Islam's disagreement is not with the greatness of Jesus but with the nature of God.

Jesus in Islam7 min

Christians believe that God is one Being in three Persons — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — co-equal and co-eternal, and that Jesus is God the Son incarnate. This is the historic teaching of the Nicene Creed, and most Christians hold it as central. It would be dishonest to pretend Islam and Christianity can be reconciled on this point. They cannot.

But it is worth being precise about what Islam's objection is, because it is often misunderstood.

What Islam affirms about God

The centre of Islam is tawḥīd: God is absolutely one, without partner, without parts, without equal. He is not born and does not give birth. Nothing resembles Him. This is not a peripheral teaching; it is the first half of the sentence by which a person becomes Muslim.

Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent."
Qur'an — Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:1-4Translation: Saheeh International

What the Qur'an says about the Trinity

The Qur'an addresses Christians directly on this point — not with contempt, but with a call to stop.

O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.
Qur'an — Surah An-Nisa 4:171Translation: Saheeh International
  • Qur'anQur'an 4:171
  • TafsirIbn Kathir, Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, on 4:171On 'do not say Three' and the meaning of Jesus as 'a word from Him'.

The objection, stated fairly

The Qur'anic argument is not that 'three cannot be one' as a matter of arithmetic — Christians themselves do not claim three gods, and the Qur'an is not attacking a position no one holds. The objection is that attributing sonship, incarnation or divinity to any created being — however honoured — compromises the absolute uniqueness of God. To Islam, Jesus being born of Mary, eating, sleeping, praying and dying are marks of a creature, not of the Creator; and the Creator is not like His creation in any respect.

This is why the Qur'an insists on Jesus's full humanity at exactly the moments it praises him most highly. He is the Messiah, a word from God, strengthened by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, a worker of miracles by God's permission — and a servant of God, who himself worshipped.

The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food. Look how We make clear to them the signs; then look how they are deluded.
Qur'an — Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:75Translation: Saheeh International

In the Qur'an, the infant Jesus's first words are these:

[Jesus] said, "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet."
Qur'an — Surah Maryam 19:30Translation: Saheeh International

A point of contact

Muslims often note that the Gospels record Jesus affirming the oneness of God in terms every Muslim would recognise — quoting the Shema, 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one' — and record him praying to the Father, describing the Father as greater than himself, and disclaiming knowledge of the hour. Christians read these passages in the light of the incarnation. Muslims read them at face value. The passages themselves are common ground; the interpretation is where the paths divide.

We offer this not as a proof-text war but as an invitation: read what Jesus is recorded as saying about God, and ask whether the Qur'an's account of him is as foreign as you had assumed.

What is not being said

Islam does not say Christians worship a different God. The Qur'an says: 'our God and your God is one.' It does not say Christians are Islam's enemies; it calls them People of the Scripture and permits Muslims to eat with them and marry among them. And it does not say that Jesus was a liar or a fraud; it says he was a true prophet whose message was, over time, misunderstood by some of those who came after him.

The disagreement is about God's nature. It is a real disagreement, and both sides should be honest that it is. But it is a disagreement between people who both love the same Jesus and both believe in one God — and that is where the conversation can begin.

And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
Qur'an — Surah Al-'Ankabut 29:46Translation: Saheeh International
